The Rosemount Irish boys' hockey team exploded for five goals in the second period and crushed Rochester Century 8-2 on Tuesday night.

The Irish fell behind 2-0 in the first five minutes of the game but then scored the next five goals on their way to their 11th victory on the season.

Century came out of the gates fast as they scored at 1:17 and again at 4:29 of the first period to take a 2-0 lead.

Rosemount cut the lead to 2-1 when James Saintey scored at 6:36 on an assist from Brandon Rogers.

Two minutes later, the Irish tied it up at 2-2 when J.T. Brown set up Dustin Dale for a goal.

The first period slowed down from there and the period ended with the teams tied at 2-2.

In the second period, Rosemount turned it up a notch and scored five times to turn a close game into a blowout.

First, Brown scored a power play goal at 2:27 of the second period on assists from Bill Hamilton and Dylan Porter.

Five minutes later, Mike Vath made it 4-2 with a goal on assists from Saintey and Nate Percy.

Percy then set up Nick Larsen and Nick Carlson on a power play goal to push the lead to 6-2 with four minutes left to play in the second period.

Century cut the lead to 6-3 at 16:19 only to have Jeremy Wicker make it 7-3 30 seconds later when Ross Sanders and Alex Rood set him up for a goal.

The third period wasn't as explosive as the Irish tightened up their defense and only allowed seven shots on net.

Brown iced the game with his second goal of the game on assists from Porter and Dale at 7:18 of the third period.

Irish goalie Ben Percy stopped 27 shots in the victory.

The Irish next play Lakeville South at home tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Next week, they play Edina at home on Tuesday, Feb. 7, and then Bloomington Jefferson on the road on Thursday, Feb. 9. Both games start at 7:30 p.m.
