It's that time of year where driving safety becomes a special concern. As freezing rain and snow begin to blanket city streets and metro highways, Apple Valley Sgt. John Bermal warns drivers to be extra careful.
"The biggest thing is an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," Bermal said.
He said it's important for drivers to consider safety from the aspect of driving and vehicle maintenance.
He said drivers should check their vehicle's tires now or have a mechanic check their trend depth.
"If you're thinking of getting new tires, this would be the time," he said.
He also advises filling the window washer fluid and checking windshield wipers.
"And from a driving aspect, just start to get into the mindset that it's going to take longer to get places and you won't be able to stop as quickly," he said.
He cautions SUV and other 4-wheel vehicle drivers to break carefully. SUVs won't stop any faster than a car. Because of their weight, they may slide longer and faster upon braking, according to Bermal.
"I also want to remind people to start stopping when you see a yellow light," he said. "In the summer they may make it, but in winter you need to start stopping."
Drunk driving
During the holiday season, the Apple Valley Police Department will continue its efforts to combat drunk driving by participating in a statewide effort to enforce impaired driving through increased patrols and education. Officers will partner with other law enforcement agencies throughout Dakota County to target impaired drivers.
Currently, the state of Minnesota is on track to record the lowest number of traffic deaths since 1945. In 2005, 28 people died in motor vehicle accidents in Dakota County.
Apple Valley officers strive to make roads safer by having zero tolerance for impaired drivers. Last year, 2,650 motorists were arrested for DWI in Dakota County. So far in 2006, Apple Valley officers have removed 255 drunk drivers from our roadways.
