Several thefts from vehicles in the northern half of Lakeville have police cautioning residents to remove all valuables from their cars before parking them for the night.
The Lakeville Police Department responded to seven individual theft from vehicle calls, in which checkbooks, small change, sunglasses, CDs, and one laptop computer were stolen.
Sgt. Dave Delmonico said the thefts were all ěsmash and grabî cases. The suspects broke windows and removed visible items from the vehicles.
Delmonico said that in cases like this, itís not just local thieves that may be responsible. In the past, Lakeville police officers have tracked suspects who have swept down through the metro area from the northern suburbs, canvassing neighborhoods in the evening and breaking into vulnerable cars.
The thefts occurred between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. the evenings of Feb. 28 and 29. Delmonico estimated the total loss in all the cases was $5,000 to $7,000.
Delmonico said all of these thefts were preventable crimes if residents had parked their cars in their garage or removed their valuables from sight.
