A Bloomington man was arrested Tuesday in Eagan for driving a golf cart into a parked car while allegedly under the influence of alcohol.
The parked car he struck turned out to be his own, according to police.
Police responded to a call Tuesday afternoon from the Parkview Golf Club in Eagan reporting that John Konkel, 65, had driven his golf cart into a parked vehicle. When officers arrived, they reportedly found the golf cart tipped over and cuts on Konkelís face. The officers conducted field sobriety testing and found probable cause that he was under the influence of alcohol, said Eagan Police Chief Kent Therkelsen.
There was minor damage to the car and golf cart, Therkelsen said, but there was ìmore damage to him than the vehicles.î
Therkelsen said Konkel was checked by medics at the scene and cleared for transport to jail. Once at the jail, however, he complained of wrist pain and was taken to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a broken wrist. Konkel refused alcohol tests at the hospital, so his driverís license was revoked, Therkelsen said.
According to Therkelsen, Konkel has a history that includes a prior DWI in Hennepin County in 2000 and a prior open bottle charge in Eagan in 2001.
The city attorney should decide in the next couple of weeks whether Konkel will be charged with driving while intoxicated, he said.
ìThis is a person that posed a hazard to the public,î he said. ìThere is no doubt in my mind that he would have been behind the wheel of his car moments after if the police hadnít intervened.î
