Despite a sudden closing last month, there may be reason to believe Farmington Bakery will remain a fixture in the cityís downtown.

Farmington resident Bob Bue, with some help from his friends, is looking into purchasing the 70-year-old bakery on Oak Street. And Bue is not the only one interested. Carroll Westenberg, who owned the bakery from 1966 to 2000, confirmed that several people have talked to him about the business.

ìIím sure it can be a good business for another owner and Iím delighted thereís so much interest in keeping it around,î Westenberg said. He did not release the names of any other interested parties.

Bue admitted the process is in an early stage, but said he, his wife and a group of their friends are very interested in rebuilding the bakeryís connection to the Farmington community.

To be competitive, however, he said some changes to the businessís format might need to be made. In particular, he suggested something like a coffee shop atmosphere be created, where more mellow music might be played Friday and Saturday nights.

ìWeíd probably have to contract some parts and expand some parts of the menu,î he said. ìWeíre always looking for a place Friday and Saturday nights where the music isnít at 180 decibels, where you can just kind of hang out.î

Bue said the financial details would need be worked out and a clear demand for such a business would have to be shown, but he is hopeful he will be able to make it work.

ìThere are a lot of balls being juggled right now, a lot of questions to be answered,î he said. ìI really love Farmington and I hate to see something like this, thatís so important to the community, just go away.î

A representative from Anchor Bank, which holds an interest in Farmington Bakery, could not be reached for comment.
