Taxpayers in Farmington will likely see a jump in the school district share of their property taxes next year.
At a Sept. 23 meeting, members of the District 192 School Board approved a preliminary levy of $6.04 million for 2003, about $1.06 million more than 2002. For the owner of an average home in the district, the change will mean a tax increase of $164 if the levy is given final approval by the board in December.
According to business manager Lisa Rider, most of the increase is to service bonds sold in 2000 to fund the construction of Meadowview Elementary School. Rider said the district will begin paying off the $25 million principal for those bonds next year, resulting in a debt service levy increase of about $760,000.
The board also gave preliminary approval to increases of $213,000 and $81,000 for the general fund levy and community service fund levy, respectively.
Combined, the increases represent about a 35 percent hike in levied dollars, though continued residential growth in the district means individual taxes will increase by about 14 percent.
Notices detailing how much each landowner will be taxed in 2003 will be mailed out in November. District 192 will hold a truth-in-taxation meeting Dec. 3 before the board approves a final levy amount at its Dec. 16 meeting.
