Eastview boys and Apple Valley girls win True Team sections

For the track and field teams, this is the week the season becomes interesting.

This marks the beginning of a month-long stretch when the track teams have nothing but big meets in which to compete.

Starting this week was the True Team sections. Next week is the Lake Conference meet, followed by the the True Team state meet for those who qualify. In two weeks is the state sections, followed by the state tournament.

But this past weekís weather hasnít been very conducive to holding any track meets.

One section was able to squeeze its True Team meet in between all of the rain. That was Section 3, which competed at Apple Valley High School. Apple Valley, Eastview and Rosemount participated.

Eagan High Schoolís True Team was rained out Wednesday, May 8 and Lakevilleís was Thursday, May 9, after this edition of Thisweek Newspapers went to press.

Burnsville and Farmington did not participate in True Team competition this year.

Following is a look at how each team did at the Section 3 True Team competition.

Eastview

For the first time in school history, the Eastview Lightning boysí track team defeated Apple Valley.

Not only did they defeat Apple Valley, the Lightning won the meet and qualified for the state True Team meet.

Last year, the Lightning qualified as a wild card and finished third overall.

ìItís pretty exciting. The kids did a great job,î head coach Troy Swanson said. ìItís good to beat Apple Valley.î

Eastview won the meet with 785.5 points, ahead of Apple Valleyís 646.

The Lightning did well in the running events, especially in the 100 meters. In the 100 meters, Eastview finished 1-2.

Winning the race was John Shevlin with a time of 11.13. Sophomore Shane Shaw finished second with a time of 11.23.

Another strong event was in the 4x100 relay where Shevlin and Shaw teamed up with Frank Wilson and Joe Bowen to win the event with the fastest time in the state this year, 43.1.

Bowen also won the 200 meters.

A surprise was in the 800 meters, where Matt Sailor finished first with a time of 2:03.

ìWe had guys run out of their minds,î Swanson said.

The long distance was also strong for Eastview. Andy Larson won the 3,200 meters with a time of 10:05 and finished second in the 1,600 with a time of 4:31. Dan Bocchi finished third in the 1,600 meters with a time of 4:33.

In the field events, Andy Freid finished first in both the long and triple jump. In the long jump, he had a jump of 20-03. He won the triple jump with a leap of 41-03.

The Eastview girls werenít able to defeat Apple Valley, but they did finish second.

Apple finished with 745 points and Eastview was second with 615.5 points.

The Lightning won four events, including two relays.

Katie Bierlein, Sara Sailer, Samantha Rondeau and Shannon Johnson teamed up to win the 4x800 with a time of 9:46.89.

The other relay that Eastview won was the 4x400. The team of Vanessa Ostergaard, Sailer, Rondeau and Bierlein combined for a time of 4:10.76 to win by more than three seconds.

Madison Darude won the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:27.49.

The last Lightning to win an event was Caitlin Lynch in the 300 meter hurdles. She won with a time of 46.77.

Apple Valley

The Eagles finished first in the girlsí competition and second in the boysí meet.

The girls won with 745 points, beating Eastviewís second-place 615.50.

The girls finished 1-2 in the 100 meters hurdles, long jump and the triple jump. Their depth also showed in the 4x100, 4x200 and the discus.

In the 100 hurdles, Dawn Solberg and Sarah Harrington finished 1-2.

In the long jump, Laura Herschl finished with a jump of 16-4. Kim Troung finished second with a jump of 16-3.5.

In the triple jump, Jen Dalhed finished first with a leap of 35 feet and Lindsey Dare was second with a 34-foot jump.

Dare also won the discus with a throw of 121-4 feet.

The Eagles also won the 4x100 and 4x200.

The boys finished behind Eastviewís 785.5 points with 646 points of their own.

Despite finishing second they may get a wild card selection because of their high point total.

The Eagles did have five first-place finishes during the meet. Apple Valley boys won the 4x800 relay, the 1,600 meters, high jump, pole vault and shot put.

Brian Polski won the 1,600 with a time of 4:31.34.

The high jump was won by Tom Uecker with a jump of 6-2.

Rosemount

For Rosemount, neither team was in the running to win the meet, but they did have some good individual efforts.

Both teams finished fifth in the meet. The boys finished with 435.5 points and the girls with 400.5.

The boys had two first-place finishes. The Irish won both the 110 hurdles and the discus.

In the discus, Tom Conboy had a throw of 164 feet to win the event.

For the girls, the only event they won was the 800 meters.
