Apple Valley will get a taste of the tropics soon.

Building-permit authorization for the Pickled Parrot Restaurant was unanimously granted by the City Council on July 25.

The 7,345 square-foot building will be located in the Fischer Market Place development. Pickled Parrot will occupy the southeast corner of the development, located on the northeast corner of the intersection of County Road 42 and Galaxie Avenue.

The upscale restaurant features a tropical theme, complete with up to six palm trees in the landscaping.

Council Member Tom Goodwin said he visited the Pickled Parrot location in downtown Minneapolis before the council meeting. He said the restaurantís menu and atmosphere were impressive.

ìBased on what I saw there,î said Goodwin, ìI think this will be a marvelous addition.î

A 1,870 square-foot outdoor patio will accompany the restaurant and include a ìtiki bar,î which is similar to a gazebo. The patio will be enclosed by a 4.5-foot vinyl fence with a pineapple design.

The Planning Commission recommended approval July 17 on a 5-0 vote. It did ask for several revisions in the plan, however.

A 26-foot by 8-foot beer cooler is planned for the southwest back corner of the patio, which the restaurant proposed to partially screen with a fence. The commission asked for the whole screen.

Commissioners also recommended that wood, trash and recycling storage areas be relocated from the back of the building to south of the beer cooler and screened with a combination of fencing and landscaping. The relocation is expected to leave the back of the building less cluttered and more attractive.

The Planning Commission asked that a decorative sidewalk connect the patio and the rear parking lot and that all sidewalks adjoining parking space be resized to assure a 5-foot minimum of walking space. According to City Planner Tom Lovelace, cars parked next to sidewalks tend to hang over about 1.5 feet. Widening the sidewalks will allow for that overhang.

Lovelace said the developers have agreed to all conditions set forth by the commission.

Pickled Parrot will join four other restaurants on the site including the International House of Pancakes, Noodles and Co., Ruby Tuesdays and Quiznos.

Mayor Mary Hamann-Roland said she has heard several residents call for an upscale restaurant in Apple Valley.

ìWeíre getting a great restaurant in Apple Valley,î she said.

The Fischer Market Place consists of about 90 acres and includes Kohlís, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Barnes and Noble (scheduled to open this fall).
