Parkview student saves life with Heimlich maneuver
Posted 6/4/01
by Brett Andersen Staff Writer Commotion on an afternoon school bus is hardly noteworthy. Commotion involving choking gets attention. District 196 bus driver Mike Stone heard the ruckus and that a student was choking May 24 during the afternoon route. Stone pulled the bus to the side of the road and went to through the vehicle expecting to find a fight with one student choking another. Instead, he discovered Parkview Elementary School fifth grader Ryan Norsby had successfully used the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge a piece of candy from the airway of first-grade student Kevin Vu. Norsby recognized Vu was not breathing, and recalled the maneuver from a health course a few weeks before. ìI didnít panic,î said Norsby. Other students were shouting at the bus driver and looking at Vu, according to Norsby. ìWe tell them not to eat on the bus,î said Stone, adding that students often ignore the rule. He said several students said they now understand why the rule exists. Hopefully, this will be a learning experience for students, he said.
